Duane, as he was known in his younger years, was a 1980 graduate of Carmel High School. George graduated from Ball State University and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
George started his career as a news photographer at WLFI-TV in 1985. His passion was shooting video for sports. Stints included the Colts, Indy 500 and Purdue Football. He later moved to WLFI Productions and produced the Fred Akers Show. On August 25, 1990, he married Theresa Thomas in Connersville and she survives.
Later in 1990, George took the big leap into advertising sales for WLFI. While working in sales, George met Tom Day. In 1994, George and Tom with Theresa on board, started Cellular Express of Indiana, Inc. George and Tom operated Cellular Express in Lafayette for 25 years. George semi retired in September of 2019 to concentrate on his health.
George was a former member of the board of directors for IFCU and member of John Purdue Club, the former Elks Lodge #143 and West Lafayette Golf and Country Club.
George enjoyed life- no two ways about it. He loved Purdue Football, Basketball and baseball. Fishing, golf and the annual trips with his buddies to Vegas were treasured. Mostly, he loved spending time with his boys, coaching soccer and cheering on baseball as well as violin concerts and riding in the boat with Thomas.
Surviving along with his wife are his sons, G. Thomas and William (Billy) Owens both of Lafayette and his sister Dee Ann Schendel, (Tom). Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his sister Denise Moore.
