Hiram was the son of David and Catherine Elizabeth (Paine) Harless of Madison Co., AL. and the grandson of Henry and Charity (Anders) Harless. Henry's parents moved to AL when he was young and he married Jane Dowdy there about 1834. After Jane's death he married Mary Jones and about 1840 moved his family to Noxube Co., MS, then about 1845 when Texas became a state he moved his family to Lavaca Co., Tx. where he and Mary resided at the time of Hiram's death. Hiram's son (by his marriage to Jane Dowdy), Charles B. Harless, also lived in Lavaca County. Hiram's children by Mary Jones were Anna Eliza (Laton), Felix Grundy, Isaac Newton, Leroy, Stephen Thomas, Franklin and Dan.
