Gerald M. DeFrees, 84, of Pontiac, passed away Monday, March 15, 2021, at 1:25 p.m. at Accolade Health Care of Pontiac.
Services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home in Pontiac with Father Adam Cesarek officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Pontiac.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home, Pontiac, is in charge of arrangements.
Gerald was born November 17, 1936, in Pontiac, IL to Clarence and Helen (Setzer) DeFrees.
He is survived by his children, Lori (Larry) Opiela of Joliet, IL and Tim (Kay) DeFrees of Hudson, IL; grandchildren, Jonathan Opiela, Hunter DeFrees and Dylan DeFrees; sister, Helen Abry of Odell, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, Robert “Bob”, Clarence “Ken”, John, William “Jake”, and Paul; and sister, Mary Ferguson.
Gerald was a graduate of St. Paul Catholic High School in Odell, IL. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He had been a pressman at Johnson Press, then worked with Burkes Services in Pontiac.
Gerald was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac, IL. He was a huge fan of the Norte Dame Fighting Irish football. He enjoyed gardening, studying the Civil War, and the Indianapolis 500.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Catholic Grade School in Odell, IL or to the family.
