He was born Dec. 27, 1930 in Pontiac, the son of Clarence H. and Helen Setzer DeFrees. He married Verne L. Long on Sept. 1, 1954 in Pontiac. She preceded him in death May 19, 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James, Robert, Clarence and William "Jake" and a sister, Mary Ferguson.
Surviving are his children, Neal A. (Karen) DeFrees and Robert P. DeFrees; two brothers, Paul DeFrees and Gerald DeFrees; a sister, Helen Abry and numerous nieces and nephews.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. His ship, the USS Rendova, took part in the atomic exercises in the Central Pacific in 1952 when the first hydrogen bomb was tested.
