Bicknell/ Salt Lake City, Utah - Mabel Mangum passed away peacefully in her sleep on 4 September 2007, just four months before her 100th birthday.

Mabel was born to Joseph Harvey and Melinda Johannah Johnson Mangum on 2 January 1908 in Bicknell, Utah. She had a happy childhood on Pine Creek Ranch and graduated from Wayne High School. She then obtained a Masters Degree from the University of Utah then did graduate work at the University of Chicago.

Mabel taught school for 30 years, starting in the charming little one-room schoolhouse in Capitol Reef, Fruita, Utah where she taught the children of all ages together. From there she taught high school in various schools in Utah, Japan and California. Mabel had excellent discipline and results in her classrooms because she related well to her students. After she retired she spent time teaching English in Iran.

During World War II she served as an Ensign in the Navy. Mabel was the first female from Wayne County to serve in the military.

Mabel lived at Parklane Senior Apartments in Salt Lake City for about 20 years and loved the residents and staff there. She participated in many enjoyable activities there. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as an instructor in Relief Society.

She was highly intelligent, traveled extensively, had a thirst for knowledge and new experiences, and had a great memory. She was extremely interested in all the members of her extended family. She was quite a lady.

Mabel is survived by her sister, Mildred Lawson of Rexburg, Idaho and her brother, Claud D. Mangum (Dawn) of Bountiful, Utah.

Preceding her in death are her parents and her siblings, Milton Mangum, Reva Hamblin, Clifford Mangum, Reta Bastian and LaRue Julien.
