Shirley A. Wilkerson Gilbert, 82, of Chesnee, SC, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 12, 2021, at her home.
Born in Spartanburg County on December 15, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Kelly J. Wilkerson and Opal Wilkerson; wife of Rev. Dr. Cletus J. Gilbert for 63 years.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Served as a former pastor’s wife, Sunday School teacher, a clerk at Carolina Cash, a welder at Spartanburg Steel, and Home Missions in Upstate New York with the Southern Baptist Convention.
Attended Southeastern Theological Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest NC.
Her pastor’s wife ministries included Canaan Baptist Church, Roebuck, SC; Perry’s Chapel Baptist Church, Franklinton, NC; Friendship Baptist Church, Pauline, SC; and Saranac Lake Baptist Church, Upstate New York.
Upon retiring, she returned to her home church where she was a member and former Sunday School teacher of Sandy Springs Baptist Church, Rutherfordton, NC.
Survivors include her son, Michael Gilbert (Gwen); daughter, Anita Williams (David); grandchildren, David Gilbert (Courtney), Kelly Williams (Garrett), Brandy Hawkins (Chris), Brandon Kline, Craig Williams (Stacie), Jordan Williams (Casey), Matthew Allen, Tyler Allen, Morgan Morgan, and Kelsey Morgan; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; siblings, Lucille Wyatt (Perry), Doris Tutterow (Claude), John Wilkerson (Carlotta), and Judy Ellison (Ronnie).
Predeceased by her youngest daughter, Rhonda Gilbert Morgan (29 May 1971 – 24 Nov 2015); and granddaughter, Brittany Parris Allen (26 Jun 1990 – 29 Sep 1990).
Chaplain Dean Cortese of Agape Hospice officiated a private graveside service at Springhill Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, David Gilbert, Jordan Williams, Matthew Allen, Tyler Allen, Brandon Kline, Garrett Williams, and Chris Hawkins.
