ROCKTON - Esther Alice "Es" Loomis, 81, of 619 Green st., Rockton, died on Thursday at the Fair Oaks Nursing Home in South Beloit.
Mrs. Loomis was a well-known civic and community person in both Rockton and Beloit. She was born on Oct. 19, 1897, in Shirland Township, Winnebago County, Ill., the daughter of Clifford and Lillian Bliss Atkinson.
She began her career after graduation from Beloit College in 1919. She taught Latin, English and mathematics at the high school level in Walworth, Wis., and Quincy, Ashland and Capron, Ill., and then for 17 years was coordinator of distributive education at Beloit Vocational and Technical Adult School.
Switching to the business field, she was personnel and training director at McNeany's Department Store in Beloit, Wisconsin for 21 years.
She held a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1943 and also took graduate work in retailing at New York University.
On July 10, 1920, she married O.E. "Doc" Loomis in Beloit. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1970 in Rockton.
Among her many coomunity activities, she was a board member and membership drive chairman for the Civic Theatre in Beloit, a membership drive leader for the Community Concert Association, and a member of the Civic Symphony Association. She was a group leader for the Stateline United Givers from 1942 to 1964. Mrs. Loomis organized a Credit Women International Chapter in Beloit and was an organizer of the Hononegah Chapter of the American Field Service (AFS) serving as its finance chairman in 1963, and was Americans Abroad Chairman from 1965 to 1967. She was a member of the Rockton Women's Club since 1930 and a member of the Phoenix Chapter 215, Order of the Eastern Star Beloit, since 1920. She was one of the organizers of the American Legion Auxiliary in Rockton.
She was also a member of the retired Teachers Association and the Blackhawk Personnel Association, Macktown Golf and Bridge Clubs. Mrs. Loomis was a well-known Beloit Altrusan, where she had been a member of Altrusa International and the Beloit Chapter since 1952 and served as president from 1960 to 1962. She was a board member for eight years and for two years was editor of the district publication. In May 1976 she was named District Altrusan of the year for an area comprised of seven states and two Canadian provinces. She attended nine interantional conventions and was one of the persons chosen to sign the Golden Scroll at the 50th Anniversary meeting in Miami, Fla.
Among her many other honors, Mrs. Loomis received a Distinguished Service Citation from Beloit College in 1969. She was elected to Who's Who in American Women in 1967 and Who's Who in the Midwest in 1968 and she was awarded a life membership of Credit Women International for 25 years of service. In December 1972 she was Radio Station WBEL's "Women of the Week."
In 1967 she and her husband became members of the United Airlines Ambassadors Club, signifying 100,000 miles of air travel.
The Loomis Outlook on the new Rockton Bridge was dedicated to both her and her husband and they cut the ribbon when the bridge was dedicated.
She is survived by her husband, O.E. "Doc" Loomis of Rockton. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dr. Dwight C. Atkinson, in 1971.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Rosman, Uehling, Kinzer Blackhawk Chapel, South Beloit, with the Dr. James Westpfahl of the Old Stone Church officiating. Burial will be in the Rockton Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Rosman, Uehling, Kinzer Blackhawk Chapel. Memorials may be given to the Hononegah Chapter, AFS Student Exchange Program, Rockton.
