There are a variety of similar sounding names that have been put forth for her middle name: Shubelle, Shipbell, Shipell, and Shapell. No official documents or anything in which she wrote it out herself have come to light.

Kate was born either in St. Charles County, Missouri, or in adjacent Lincoln County. Her family was living in Cuivre Township, St. Charles, Missouri in the mid 1850s and was living in Truxton, Lincoln, Missouri, at the time of the 1860 census. She grew up near Truxton, where she met and married Charles Pines Allen. Their first child, Arthur Lee Allen, was buried in Truxton Cemetery in early 1879.
