Samuel Dutton, son of Samuel Dutton and Hannah Walker Hill, married Martha Lane August 19, 1740, in Bedford, Middlesex Co, MA. They removed to Dummerston, Windham Co., VT, before 1770. Samuel Dutton JR's name appears in the Dummerston, January 21, 1771 meeting called to act on 7 articles for Dummerston. He and Martha Lane Dutton settled on lot No. 74 which they sold in 1777. That same year, Samuel bought lot No. 49 where he remained the rest of his life. In 1786, the farm was deeded in equal shares to Asa and Stephen.

The exact location of Samuel's burial has not been located. However, it is possible that he was buried in what has been given the name of the "old grave-yard" which was formerly in Dummerston. In 1873, 17 of the old gravestones were still left standing in the yard; at a later date, only 9 were left standing. It is thought that a large number of the first settlers must have been buried there. Skeletal remains have been discovered in the excavation or building processes in later years. One gravestone still remaining bears the date of 1793.
