In the Draper Manuscripts interview, Samuel Bell's grandson, Reverend Robert Bell, son of Robert Bell I b. 1736 said Samuel lived in Pennsylvania when son Robert was born. Then the family moved to Amherst County, VA. Samuel was probably a large landowner, since he was involved in giving property to the Presbyterian Church of Rockfish, Nellysford, VA in 1752. He then lived in Caswell County NC and finally Guilford County, NC. where Samuel was an elder in the Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
According to Samuel's grandson, Reverend Robert Donnell, son of Mary Bell and William Donnell "His mother's maiden name was Bell. She was the daughter of Samuel Bell, the great grandfather of Hon. John Bell of Tennessee. Samuel Bell was an elder in the Presbyterian church, and died on his knees, while praying in his family. His wife discovered that his voice faltered, and rose from her knees and went to him. He was barely able to speak, but said in broken accents, "Mollie, what is this; is it death?"—and immediately expired."

1st marriage, Samuel's first wife, mother of Robert I, is not known.

Another Samuel Bell with close birth and death dates FAG 83913362 is buried in Guilford County, NC but in a Methodist cemetery. Since Samuel Bell was a member of several Presbyterian churches and grandson Rev Robert Donnell was a Presbyterian minister, it didn't seem to match up.
