Death Of Mrs. Ellis.
Wife of a Pioneer Passed Away Yesterday Afternoon.
__Died Wednesday afternoon, September 20, at 3:20, Mrs. Robert Ellis, wife of one of Cedar Rapids' oldest and most honored citizens. Her death occurred at the old homestead on the west side after an illness of one week from typhoid fever.
__Mrs. Ellis, until this final claim, had been a woman of perfect health and her life has a record of great activity, usefulness and nobility of character; and having been one of the pioneers of the city her years were full of events.
__Martha L. King, daughter of William and Katherine King, was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, in 1834, and lived there until the death of her father, when she was 15 years of age. She came to Iowa with her mother and settled in Rapids township, following other members of the King family, who were among the first settlers of Cedar Rapids. In 1857 Miss King was married to Mr. Robert Ellis, who had settled on his original homestead, which he entered when there was but one log cabin where is now the city of Cedar Rapids. A commodious dwelling was erected and ready for Mr. and Mrs. Ellis for a home of their own on their wedding day.
__To this home, which is now within the city limits, there came nine children, of whom all but one are living. They are Mrs. George Buchanan, Mrs. F. A. Lyman, King W. Ellis, Sherman R. Ellis, Charles G. Ellis, Ralph Ellis, Wert Ellis and George W. Ellis. All but two sons, Sherman and Charles, were with their mother when she passed away.
__Mrs. Ellis as the wife of a pioneer and the mother of a large family had many and various duties, to which she was devotedly faithful and her whole life was beautiful example of the best womanly virtues. She was a member of the united Presbyterian church, and will be sincerely mourned by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
__The funeral service will be held tomorrow at 2 o'clock at the home. The Rev. J. A. Montieth will conduct the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. E. R. Burkhalter.
__The funeral will be held at the family residence at 2 p.m. Friday.
