Virginia was born in New York City, the daughter of Simeon Brooks and Elizabeth (Mattocks) Chapin. She traveled extensively during her youth with her mother, from Europe to Mexico and many places between. She married the Francis Augusta Drake on April 29, 1930. The marriage ended in divorce in the 1950's and she later married Burton Frye.
