DAVID BALLANTINE
January 16, 1919 - December 10, 2005

He lived the ideal life and died at the age of 85 in his own home with his beloved wife of 63 years by his side. As a prominent Newport Beach physician, David Ballantine had found the perfect career for his talents. Together, he and his wife Helen circled the globe in their travels and enjoyed their tight knit family and many friends.

Dave attended Pasadena schools and then Pomona College, where he became a track star. There he met his future wife, Helen Bartlett. Later he completed his medical education at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore. Dave served in the Army as a Captain in the Medical Corps, after which he returned to California to complete five years of surgical residency to become a member of the American Board of Surgery. He and Helen reared three children and eventually settled in Corona del Mar in Orange County, where they lived for nearly 50 years. Dr. Ballantine served as president of the Orange County Surgical Society.

He was a man of many interests and talents. From developing improved techniques in surgery to cross-breeding orchids and cloning them, he was always enterprising. Dave was a watercolorist in his spare time, as well as a lifetime golfer, hiker, snorkeler, and a fisherman who tied his own flies. In everything he did he demonstrated his unwavering enthusiasm and searching mind.

Dave is preceded in death by his brother Bill and his son Doug. He is survived by his wife Helen, daughter Alice and her husband Erick, his son Fred, granddaughter Melissa, and all his nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dave's wonderful caregiver, Reggie, and Francisco too.

Dave had the admiration of his medical colleagues, as well as the love of his family. He will always be remembered for his puns and his wit at the dinner table. Those who knew him will continue to be inspired by the memory of this strong, quiet man who did everything so well.
