Sioux Falls Frank L. Erickson, 82, of Montrose, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at Sioux Valley Hospital. Services will be 11 AM Tuesday, July 27 at George Boom Funeral Home with burial at Hills of Rest Memorial Park. Visitation begins 4 PM Monday at the funeral home. Frank Leland Erickson, son of Frank P. and Alice (Crew) Erickson was born September 24, 1921 in Hartington, NE. He grew up there and graduated from Coalridge High School in 1939.
He entered the United States Army Air Corps on November 13, 1942. Sgt Erickson was a waist gunner on the 8th Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress "Pride O' the Yanks." His decorations include the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, and awarded "Meritorious Achievement" on bombing attacks over Nazi Europe, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 25, 1945.
He farmed in rural Montrose, SD for 59 years until his death. He enjoyed farming, watching stock car races at Hartford Speedway and attending auctions.
Survivors include three nephews, Robert (Neva) Erickson, Henderson, NV, Jerry Erickson, Sioux Falls, SD, Kris Johnson, Tucson, AZ; four nieces, Cheryl (Ron) Nelson, Renner, SD, Kathy (George) Stupski, Phoenix, AZ, Kaye Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD, Terressa Ebright, Blaine, MN; nine great-nephews; two great-nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends.
