John married Bertha Elvira Robinson (born 27 January 1861 in Nova Scotia) in 1882 at Kings, Nova Scotia. John and Bertha lived for a short time in Kings before moving back to Windsor Forks. They had four children: Edward Jacob Hart (06 September 1882 – 25 July 1963), Elizabeth (Hart) Brown (05 September 1886 – 1975), Leonard John Hart (17 August 1889 – 1986) and Freeman Herbert Hart (29 June 1892 – 23 March 1984).
During his lifetime, John worked as a Butcher, a Lumberman and a Farmer. 'He was a lumber operator and speculator from early manhood, and of recent years had confined himself largely to buying and selling lumber. He was an authority on lumbering and lumber.'
'A man of strong convictions on public matters, Mr. Hart served nine years in the West Hants Municipal Council from 1914 - 1923.'
He died 01 August 1952 at Three Mile Plain, Hants County. John and Bertha had been married for 70 years as of April 1952. Bertha died 29 October 1955. They are buried together in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor, Nova Scotia.
