Mrs. Rachel Marie Scales Barnes, 77, of Ararat, VA, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2021.

She was born on May 18, 1943, in Patrick County to the late Jefferson Davis Scales, Sr. and Gladys Vanessa Gates Scales.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters and sons-in-law, Tracey and Bill Stump, Kathy Nichols, and Toni and John Lima; son and daughter-in-law, Raleigh “Buddy” and Jeanie Puckett; grandchildren, James Puckett, Pete Stump, Jimmy Stump, Stuart Stump, Tom Stump, Isaiah Puckett, Jeremiah Puckett, Lakin Crosby, Zachery Rogers, Wesley Lima; great-grandchildren, Midori Waycaster, Olive Waycaster, and Everly Rogers; sisters, and brother-in-law, Daisy Barnard, Jane, and Michael Fulk, Fay Young, and Annie Tolbert; a brother, Jefferson Davis “J.D.” Scales, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Lee Barnes; brothers, John Cardwell Scales, Jasper Stewart Scales, Jerry Bryan Scales, and James Wesley “Jimmy” Scales.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at Hunters Chapel Church Cemetery with Pastor Terry Vaughan officiating. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.
