James Bryant was the son of Simeon Bryant (Briant) of Springfield, New Jersey and Hannah Searing, daughter of John Searing.

James was born into a family who had been in America since its beginnings, arriving from Holland circa 1630. Family names have been records as Bryant, Briant, Breyant, Breijandt.
James' mother's family, the Searings came from England to America in the 1630s. (see note below)

James was born in New Jersey and began his family's westward migration, first to Pennsylvania around 1800, then on to Knox County, Ohio in 1805, where James and Anna raised their family.

James farmed "about 3 miles east and down the creek, near Fredericktown." He continued: "The country was new" and the family was visited by "unfriendly tribes, sometimes in large bands, but more often in groups of 2 or more, for the purpose of stealing horses, murder, etc." causing many settlers to leave their homes and flee to parts nearer civilization. They hunted deer, wild turkeys, raccoon, pheasant, and more. As time went by, they cleared land and planted corn and potatoes. They used deerskin and hemp to make clothing, and later, wool. They lived in a log cabin. School lasted for three months during the winter.

Children of James and Anna: William (1795); Lydia (1797) Samuel (1799), all born in NJ; Jacob (1804) PA; Abbey (1806) OH and; EW (1808) in OH.

(information from the memoirs of James' son E.W. Bryant)

James is listed in the Ohio 1850 Census as age 78, along with his daughter Abigail -- which discounts the previously believed information that he was born in 1754. See below:

Recently discovered information indicates that James may be the grandson of Simeon and Hannah (Searing) Bryant, rather than the son. It is believed James, the son of Simeon was born in 1755/56. Another of the sons of Simeon, Samuel, also had a son names James, and some New Jersey records show that this James (who married Anna Lewis) may be the son of Samuel, and grandson of Simeon. Wishing that E.W. Bryant's journal had also mentioned the names of his grandparents!
