Dr. Samuel Glen Ashley, M.D.

Dr. Samuel Glen Ashley, M.D., 91, of Chanute, passed away Monday, October 15, 2007 at Chanute Health Care.

Glen was born on July 1, 1916 in Earlton, Kansas, the son of Dr. Sam Ashley, M.D. and Julia Ashley (Gaughan) and was a lifelong resident of this community. He attended the Chanute schools graduating from Chanute High School. He graduated from the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Medical School. His internship and residency was done at the KU Medical Center.

Glen was united in marriage to Mildred E "Pete" Coffey on May 16, 1946 in Chanute. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2000.

He entered the United States Army Medical Corps in February, 1944. He entered as a First Lieutenant and received extensive training. He was then sent to France in the fall of 1944, and served in both France and Germany. In 1945 he was shipped to the South Pacific and remained there until spring of 1946. He was discharged in 1946 as a major in the Medical Corps.

He joined the Ashley Clinic with his father and brother after medical school and the army. He retired in 1986 after being a practicing physician for 40 years.

Glen was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church; life member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 1046 of which he was past Grand Knight; Sigma Nu Fraternity, University of Kansas; life member of American Medical Association.

Glen is survived by one son, Mike Ashley and his wife Durinda of Prairie Village; five daughters, Linda Ashley of Chanute, Pam Ashley of Wichita, Patricia Shillcutt and her husband Chuck of Salem, Oregon, Mary Winder and her husband Bill of Chanute, and Janis Converse and her husband Gary of Lenexa, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren, Mike and his wife Holly, Meridith, Elisabeth, Robert, Anna, Brad, Lindsay, Molly, Susan, Cindy, Julie, Tommy, and Sam; and three great-grandchildren, Ava, Kaitlyn and Caleb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Pete; three bothers, Dr. Ed (George L.) Ashley, Neil Ashley, and Richard L. Ashley; two sisters, Virginia VanLeeuwen and Betty Manley.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at the St. Patrick's Church. Burial will follow at the St. Patrick's cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church on Wednesday, October 17, 2007.

Memorials in his name may be made to St. Patrick's Church and Horizon Hospice.
