Richard Lyle "Dick" Ashley, 76, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, died Thursday, July 12, 2001.

He was born February 22, 1925, in Chanute, Kansas, the son of Samuel and Julia Ashley.

He graduated from Chanute High School in 1943, from University of Kansas in 1950 and from University of Kansas Law School in 1952. He was co-captain of the KU golf team when it won the Big 7 title.

He served three years in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of WWII.

On December 27, 1947, he married Jeanne M. Brown. She died August 14, 1981.

On May 13, 1989, he married Marjorie C. Allen in Chanute, Kansas. She survives.

He began his private practice in Chanute in 1952. He served as Neosho County attorney for two terms, as Municipal Judge for six terms and District Judge from 1977 - 1990.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi, Kansas Bar Association, Kansas District Judge Association, a 50-year member of the American Legion, Elks and the Chamber of Commerce. He organized and was the first president of the Chanute United Fund. He served as chairman of the Red Cross fund and Red Cross blood program.

Other survivors include two daughters, Julia Van Vickle, of Springfield, MO, and Mindy Sunderlin, of Bowling Green, KY; a brother, Dr. Glen Ashley, of Chanute, KS; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen B. Ashley; and a granddaughter, Amanda Van Vickle.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 20, 2001, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Chanute, Kansas. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Association.

Johnson Mortuary, Chanute, Kansas, is in charge of arrangements.
