David was born on June 12, 1953 in Indianapolis, Indiana to James William Church I and Virginia Williams Church. The family moved to Evansville when he was 1, where David attended Harper Grade School and Harrison High School, playing sports of every kind. At Harrison, where he graduated in 1971, David played varsity football and basketball and was All Conference and All State Honorable Mention his Senior year, in addition to being on the school newspaper and yearbook staffs. He went on to attend college at Jacksonville University on a basketball scholarship, before he transferred to Kansas State University, where he graduated in 1976 with a major in Psychology and minor in Business.

After college, David was employed as an Account Executive of Channel 14 WFIE-TV and Sales Representative for Lamar Outdoor Advertising in Evansville before moving to Gastonia in 2003, where he worked as the Territorial Sales Manager for Fairway Outdoor.

David loved the Gastonia area and enjoyed playing golf and boating with his many new friends. In addition to sports, David's greatest loves were his dogs who loved him back just as much.

The ultimate truth about David is that he was deeply loving. He was also kind, loyal, tender hearted, jolly and generous. His dad would tell people it was often difficult for him to play football, because the guys he tackled were his friends.
