She was a life long member of the Society of Friends community near the place of her birth.
She moved with her father's family to Hamilton, County, Indiana, in 1851, She completed her education at Union High Friends Academy, Westfield, Ind., following by three years of teaching in Legrand, Ia., which was also the place of her marriage.
Mr. and Mrs. Bales moved to Cuba, Kan., in 1873, where they became actively engaged in pioneer Friends work. In 1906 they moved to Oklahoma where she continued in the ministry until 1918.
She leaves to mourn her loss a son, Walter S. Bales; a daughter, Mary Mabel Kasparek, both of Alva, Okla.; Julia E. Campbell of Fairview, Okla; nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
