John Thomas (Tom) Lopez, Sr.
October 21, 1940 - January 15, 2021
Tom's family mourns the loss of a big presence in their lives. Tom was a born-again Christian, who loved God and started each day by praying. He was humorous, wise, generous, and big hearted. Tom was always known to fight the good fight, but unfortunately, sudden sickness was more than his body could handle. On January 15, 2021, at the age of 80, Tom left his body and joined Jesus in paradise.
Tom was born on October 21, 1940 in Bakersfield, California and he grew up in Lamont, and attended Arvin High School. He married young and raised three children. Later, at 42 years old, Tom married Janis Moore. Tom was a standout employee in every job he held: General Motors, Shell Oil Co. (retired), and Crimson Oil Co. After retirement, Tom became a Security Supervisor at Rabobank Arena, because he enjoyed people and loved the backstage access to the music scene.
Tom had an enormous passion for music, both listening to and playing. He was an avid musician his entire life, and for 17 years was a member of a popular local band, Aztlan. Tom loved attending concerts, live-music festivals, and small-stage performances, because music spoke to his soul. One of his greatest joys was playing acoustic guitar for hours with his son, John.
Tom LOVED food and is also fondly remembered as "Tom Terrific", as he frequently commented on Facebook about the various places he patronized.
Tom also loved sports, as a player, coach, and fan. He coached women's softball and Little League baseball in Taft, and he absolutely loved watching and supporting his children and grandchildren in all of their sports and activities.
Tom is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jan; sister Adeline Adams (Bob); daughter Michelle Lopez; son John Lopez, Jr. (Angie); son Jerry Lopez (Kelly); grandchildren; a great granddaughter; numerous extended family; and friends he called family, especially Jeff Albitre, who was like a son.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Homes-Southwest, in Bakersfield. Masks required and social distancing will be respectfully followed. For those who can not attend, service will be Live Streamed on Tom's Facebook page.
