Edward was the sixth of ten children born to John and Lydia (Goffe) Sprague. He married Dorothy Lane the fifth of six children of Job and Anna (Reyner) Lane. The Reverend Mr. Wigglesworth performed the ceremony. Edward was a miller by trade and owned a corn mill situated on the three mile brook near Ell Pond, and became an important factor in the life of this new and growing community. The power which supplied this mill was secured by raising Spot Pond nine feet by a dam and became the center of strife and cause of lawsuits. He was for many years a tithingman whose duty it was to watch over the moral welfare of a special charge, preserve order in the meeting house, and enforce the general observance of the Lord's day. He was chosen town treasurer, March 9, 1695/6, which is the first record of a Malden Town Treasurer. In 1698 he was Constable, was Selectman in 1699, 1704, 1704, 1710 and again at the time he died, 1715. He represented the town in the General Assembly in 1696 and in 1703. Was also Captain in the Malden Militia at the time of his death.

∼Edward was the 52 year old husband of Dorothy, who survived him and passed away at the age of 58 on March 29, 1727.
