Shirley was a legal Secretary for the Peters Law Firm until she was appointed Deputy Clerk of the U.S. District Court in 1983, retiring in 2003. After retiring, she enjoyed volunteering at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. She was an avid fan of NASCAR and the Kansas City Chiefs. Shirley was also a member of the St. John Lutheran Church.
