Gerald “Gib” Donald Gibson, age 99 years 5 months 3 days, died Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at his home in Sioux Falls surrounded by his family. His funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, February 8 at East Side Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Monday until the time of service at the church.

Gerald was born on August 23, 1921 in Lennox, SD to Vernon A. and Amanda H. (Stengel) Gibson. He was raised on a farm near Lennox where he attended country school. As he got older his family moved to a farm in Wall Lake Township. Gerald then received his education and graduated at Hartford High School. While in high school, Gerald met the love of his life in Maurine Steineke. Gerald and Maurine were united in marriage on September 12, 1942 in Dakota City, NE. Upon the outbreak of WWII, Gerald answered his call of duty, joining the United States Army. Gerald stormed the beaches of Normandy in the second wave of attacks on Omaha Beach. He served in the Company B 359th Infantry 19th Division in five campaigns. He received various medals until he was honorably discharged upon the German Surrender.

Gerald returned to Sioux Falls, SD and began working for John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls, where he would spend 40-years working as a truck driver. Gerald and Maurine were blessed with four children, Gary, Jerry, Sandi and Vicki. Gerald, being raised on farms, never lost the love of working on the farm. Upon his parents’ passing, he took over the farm near Wall Lake. Gerald took great pride in managing the animals, garden, and farm operations. He successfully restored multiple structures including the house, barn, and multiple garages on the homestead. Unfortunately, a tornado on June 25, 2003 wiped out the property.

Gerald was an active member of East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where he served as an usher for many years. He was a lifetime member of both the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, dancing, working in the yard, gardening, Twins baseball, cooking and traveling. Above all he loved spending time with his family. Gerald was a loving husband to Maurine for over 70 years until her passing on February 12, 2014. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his four children, Gary Gibson and his wife, Angie, Sioux Falls, SD, Jerry Gibson and his wife, Sharon, Sioux Falls, SD, Sandi Larson and her husband, Leonard, Sioux Falls, SD and Vicki Gibson-Garry and her husband, Mike Garry, Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren, Todd (Shelly) Gibson, Kristi Gibson-Jarackzeski, Jason (Kimberly) Gibson, James (Stephanie) Gorham, Cale (Lori) Slack, Melissa Gibson-Breit (Lance Breit), Maurin (Jake) Fisher, 21 great grandchildren, Amanda (Matt), Ashley, Abby (fiancé Will), Justin, Nate, Blake, Sydney, Samuel, Mya, Kaitlyn, Greyson, Lily, Sally, CJ, Sawyer, Rain (fiancé, Kateryna), Arianni, Lahya, Ava, Josie, TJ; 6 great-great-grandchildren, Madilyn, Audrey, Venus, Ezekiel, Snow, and Eugene; and a host of other relatives and friends.
