Age, 75, died on Sunday, August 11, 1957, at Marshfield, WI. He was born on November 22, 1881, in Berlin, Germany, son of Emil and Albertina (Weiland) Schwandt. He was brought to the United States as an infant and his family lived in Poy Sippi, New London and Stephensville before settling in Shiocton.
Schwandt was one of the last large saw mill operators in Shiocton. His mill, which was retired some 40 years ago, was near the site of the present Shiocton Kraut company. He also directed a large thrasher crew using a steam engine thrasher. He was one of the first men in the county to use a gasoline powered tractor for thrashing.
For the last 30 years he worked with machines. He invented a cabbage planter and devised a 6-wheel truck, the principle of which is still being used. At the time his last illness incapacitated him, he was working on a cabbage harvester.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; three daughters, Mrs Miles (Esma) Wincentsen, Shiocton, Mrs. Evelyn Heinz, Menasha, and Mrs. Raymond (Florence) Trost, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; four sons, Delbert, Harley, Virgil and Marlyn, all of Shiocton; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Ruth Marie Schwandt; a grandson, Donald Schwandt; a brother, Max Schwandt; and a sister, Mary Tuckwood.
Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Wednesday, August 14, 1957, at First Lutheran Church, Shiocton. Friends may call at the Sawyer Funeral home, Shiocton, from noon Tuesday, until noon Wednesday, and then at the church.
