He had an older brother Terry Lynn Sharp who was born 7 August 1953 and two twin sisters who were born 2 June 1956 and died the same day. He grew up and went to school in Greeley. He attended Maplewood Elementary, Heath Jr. High, and Greeley West High School, graduating in 1979.
He married Wendy Tinsley on 29 Jun 1985 at the Greeley Christian Church in Greeley. They had a son Zachery Douglas Sharp born in 17 Feb 1985 in Greeley, and a daughter Emma LeAnn Sharp born on 24 Sep 1989 in Greeley. Doug and Wendy were divorced. Zachery now lives in Lawton, Oklahoma and Emma lives in Savannah, Georgia.
Growing up, Doug enjoyed racing slot cars, playing golf, and bowling. He worked as a mason.
