5817 Private J Lambert, 3rd Battalion, serving with the 1st Battalion the York and Lancaster Regiment. Volunteeredfor service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Majestic about 13 Dec 1899, arriving at the Cape about the 30 Dec 1899, and were at once sent round to Durban. Along with the 2nd Royal Lancaster Regiment, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, and 1st South Lancashire Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate. They fought at Venter's Spruit, chiefly on 20th January, when they had 10 killed and about 100 wounded. In the feint attack on Brakfontein on 5 Feb 1900 the battalion had 1 killed and 21 wounded. After Vaal Krantz they remained at Frere and Springfield to protect the British left and rear but were brought back to the main army in time to take part in the battle of Tugela Heights (14-27 Feb 1900), the final and successful assault on the Boer position between the Tugela and Ladysmith. After the relief of Ladysmith, the battalion was part of the advance north and was present at the taking of Botha's Pass and the battle of Alleman's Nek. Thereafter for a time they guarded the railway, and then were chiefly employed about the north of Natal and the south-east of the Transvaal. The battalion remained a long time about Volksrust, Wakkerstroom, Ingogo, and Utrecht. Pte Lambert died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 14 Stationary Hospital, Fort Napier, Pietermaritzburg, Natal aged 32 years. He was buried in Fort Napier Cemetery. He is also commemorated on the York and Lancaster Regiment Boer War memorial in Weston Park Gardens, Western Bank, Sheffield, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/197997) and on the York and Lancaster Regiment Boer War memorial in York Minster, Deansgate, York, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/263179/).
