Francis Thomas Hughes enlisted in the 7th Cavalry on 22 May 1875 at Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory, and was assigned to Company L. He was a Private who was killed with Custer's Column and was survived by a wife and three children. His widow, Mary Madden, married John J. Rafter, a survivor of the battle, on 17 February 1877.
