Mary was the widow of Pvt. Francis Thomas Hughes of Company L of the 7th U.S. Cavalry, who was killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Sgt. John J. Rafter was in Company K, a good friend of Francis Thomas Hughes, who survived the battle.

Mary Hughes married John J. Rafter on 17 February 1877, possibly at Fort Abraham Lincoln, home post of the 7th U. S. Cavalry.
