John Rickert
July 22, 1942 ~ January 22, 2021 (age 78)

Elmore John Rickert III passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, January 22, 2021 at the age of 78. John was born on July 22, 1942 in Big Rapids, MI. His parents were Elmore John Rickert II and Marjorie Adaline Dewitt-Rickert. The first 7 years of his life were spent on the family farm before moving to Evart, MI following the death of his father in June, 1949. John attended school in Evart and graduated from H.S. in 1960. He went on to college and graduated in 1965 from Ferris State University with a B.S. in Accounting. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation and received a commission from Navy OCS. He served in Vietnam from 1968-69. After his service in the Navy, John moved to Los Angeles and worked for Seidman- Seidman as a CPA until 1978. It was during this time he met Zulema “Sue” Riojas. They married in 1972 and 5 years later had one daughter, Marisa. John moved his family to Porterville, CA in 1981 and was employed as an Accountant for Hiller Aviation. In 1984 John went into business for himself and worked as a CPA for 41 years until retiring at the age of 70. He was a local Elks member for 26 years and a member of the Porterville Tule Kiwanis for over 20 years. John was an avid sports fan and could often be seen watching a Dodgers game or any airing sports program. He also enjoyed taking on projects around the home, maintaining his yard, and riding his bike. John encouraged the importance of hard work and education to his daughter and granddaughters; most notably remembered for often reciting a wide variety of quotes and proverbs such as, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” and “a job worth doing is a job worth doing well”. Such statements were not always well received in their younger years; however, these messages left life-long impressions and will be forever cherished by his daughter and granddaughters.

He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Sue Rickert; daughter Marisa and husband Michael Gutierrez and three granddaughters Arielle, Azlynn, and Aiyanna; sister, Barbara Johnson and her three children; and brother, William (Linda) Rickert and their two children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, James Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at a later date and time. Memorial service is still being planned for a future date.
