She was born on June 8, 1930, in Gillespie County, Texas, to Lanzo and Olga Weirich Usener.
Larry is survived by her children, Dianne Dietz of Round Rock; Marvinette "Susie" Muenzler and husband Randy of Austin; and Rod Dietz and wife Paula of Round Rock; grandchildren, Kimberly Hardi (partner Bill Bova), Melissa Muenzler (husband Richard Howell), Michelle Muenzler, Allison Dietz, and Kaitlyn Dietz; great-grandchildren Nina Hopper, Eleanor Bova, and Harper, Henry, and Holland Howell; brother Lanzo Usener; sisters-in-law Esther Schlortt and June Usener; brothers-in-law Melvin Staudt and Dempsey Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Ora Staudt and Eileen Gold, and by her beloved husband, Marvin O. Dietz.
Through Marvin’s career with the Texas Department of Public Safety, they had the opportunity to live and make life-long friends in Edinburg, San Antonio, Beaumont, and finally in Austin.
Wherever they lived, Marvin and Larry were always involved in their church and community and they built great relationships with their neighbors.
When the kids got older, Larry went to work at IRS in Austin.
In 1979, Marvin and Larry moved to Round Rock where they became faithful members of Palm Valley Lutheran Church.
Marvin and Larry loved spending time at their ranch in the Texas Hill Country, especially after retirement. As long as they were there, it didn’t matter if they were working, hunting, or just relaxing on the porch—it was all good.
Larry enjoyed cooking for her family (including lots of great Christmas cookies and keeping everybody stocked with Oma’s pickles and jellies), tending her vegetable garden and other plants, and working her crossword and jigsaw puzzles. We’ll continue to keep a puzzle “in progress” on the special table at the ranch. She’d want it that way.
The family would like to express appreciation to the Palm Valley Quilters who took Larry into their fold following Marvin’s death in 2010 and gave her much to look forward to each week (she always enjoyed visiting around the quilts being made and snacking on the refreshments people brought), to her caring neighbors Lola and Juan Mancha (and Savannah), and to the staff at Hospice Austin for their compassion and support during these last few weeks.
Due to Covid-19 constraints, the gravesite service will be limited to immediate family only on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at Greenwood Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Texas.
Memorials may be made to Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 E. Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock, TX 78665 or at www.pvlc.org, or to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759 or at www.hospiceaustin.org.
