4425 Private A Garlick, 1st Battalion the (Prince of Wales's Volunteers) South Lancashire Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Canada about 1 Dec 1899 and arrived at the Cape about 20 Dec 1899, then going on to Durban to join the Ladysmith relief force. Along with the 2nd Royal Lancaster, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, and 1st York and Lancaster Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate. They fought at Venter's Spruit, 20-22 Jan 1900 and were at Spion Kop on 23 Jan 1900. They took a prominent part in the battle of Tugela Heights 14-28 Feb 1900, the break in battle to Ladysmith. Pte Dewhurst fell ill and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 14 Stationary Hospital, Fort Napier, Pietermaritzburg, Natal. He was buried in Fort Napier Cemetery. He is also commemorated on the South Lancashire Regiment Boer War memorial in Queen's Gardens, Palmyra Square, Warrington, Cheshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/187965).
