1ST LT US Army Air Forces
World War IIWallace B. Johnson passed away peacefully on January 22, 2021, just short of his 100th birthday. He was born to Wallace and Carrie Johnson on February 26, 1921, in El Dorado, Arkansas. When Wallace was a teen, the Johnson family moved from Arkansas to Longview, Texas, where he met his future wife Ella Lee Willard. Wallace graduated from Longview High School, then attended Kilgore College where he pursued his interest in flying and got his private pilot's license. He and his younger brother enlisted in the Army Air Corps when WWII came along. He was sent to flight school and upon graduation, he was assigned to a bomber squadron in the South Pacific as a navigator. He flew many missions in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he went to Southern Methodist University and graduated with an engineering degree. He spent many years working as a petroleum engineer for British Petroleum in Odessa and Dallas, Texas.

His grandchildren were the light of his life. He also had many other interests throughout his life; photography, woodworking, golf, gardening, and history. He began taking pictures during his military service and continued doing so until later in life. He was skilled at woodworking and enjoyed making furniture for his children and grandchildren and anyone else who admired his work. He especially enjoyed carving highly detailed duck decoys and figurines of golfers. Shortly after he began his professional career, he took up golfing and this became a weekly outing shared with Ella Lee and their friends. His yard and garden, along with his annual Christmas light display, won many awards from the neighborhood association. After he became a grandparent, he spent countless hours with his grandchildren teaching them golf, woodworking, gardening, and various other things. He was never too busy to spend time with them and had many a good story to tell mostly involving rambunctious pranks from his childhood or his time in the military. He enjoyed reading more and more as he aged, mostly history books and wartime themed novels. Amazingly, he always knew what the outcome would be.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Ella Lee, his parents Wallace and Carrie Johnson, sister Mary Owen Johnson and brother Charles R. "Charlie" Johnson. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

Rest in peace, sir.
