Wilma Howery Johnson Benton was born to Florence and Roscoe Howery. After graduation from Welsh High School, she moved to Lake Charles for a few years. Most of her life was spent in Beaumont, Texas where she and her husband, Earl Johnson (who predeceased her) were business owners of an automotive paint supply. Subsequently, she remained in Beaumont where she married Francis Benton (who has also predeceased her.) She returned to Lake Charles where she resided for the remainder of her life, mostly at Villa Maria Retirement Center.

Wilma was preceded in death by both parents and her four sisters, Ollie Belle Howery Haggett, Thelma Dale Howery Dishman, Ruth Howery Reynolds, and Florence Howery Stephens, and one nephew, J.C. Dishman, Jr. Survivors include her nieces, Martinetta Haggett Burleson (her caregiver) and Ginger Davis Dishman and Zane Dishman; nephews, Connie Mack Burleson, Jr. (her caregiver), Robert Stephens, Jr., Robert Stephens III, Rodney Dishman, Tim Dishman, Clay Dishman, Zach Dishman and Josey Dishman.
