US Congressman. Florida Governor. He attended South Carolina College and then moved to Augusta, Georgia to study law, attaining admission to the bar in 1810. In 1816 he was elected Judge of the Georgia Superior Court, serving until 1819. In 1818 he was the successful Democratic-Republican nominee for the US House of Representatives seat left vacant by John Forsyth's resignation. Reid was elected to full terms in 1818 and 1820 and served from February, 1819 to March, 1823. He served as Judge of Georgia's Circuit Court from 1823 to 1825, and Augusta's City Court from 1827 to 1832. In 1832 Reid was appointed US District Judge for East Florida, serving until 1839, and was President of the Florida convention that prepared and ratified the Constitution that led to statehood. In December 1839 President van Buren appointed him Governor of Florida Territory, and he served until the end of van Buren's administration in March, 1841. Reid died suddenly in a yellow fever epidemic shortly after the end of his term as Governor.
