Though born in an era when women had few choices, Mary Ann led an extremely interesting life. Born in 1871, she was the Granddaughter of a Texas Ranger. She married Jesse Merck in Texas. They moved to Oklahoma and had 3 sons, one of whom died at the age of 2. Jesse died only 6 months following the birth of their 3rd child. Left a widow with 2 young boys, Mary Ann soon remarried. Her second husband had the last name of Scott and is believed to have been a cousin of sorts on her mothers side. One son was born of this union. Apparently things did not fare well for this union, and Mary Ann and her husband separated while their son was still a young boy. The father decided to go to California and took young Aaron with him. Mary Ann promptly followed, retrieved the boy and returned to Oklahoma. Quite a feat in the first decade of the 1900's!
It was around this time that Mary Ann decided that she needed a better way to support herself and her boys. Leaving the children with her mother she headed north for a Chiropractic School which taught the Palmer Method. Returning to Oklahoma as a Doctor of Chiropractic she then had a means by which to support her small family. This showed great determination for a young woman in the very early 1900's.
Mary Ann apparently broke the mold in other areas In an old picture of Mary Ann we see her as a cowpoke, out on the range roping cattle with three men complete in her overalls and cowboy hat.
Mary Ann died in 1957 at the age of 86.
