The first of seven children born to African Americans John H. and Amanda (Church) Jenkins. His family moved from Connecticut to Boston about 1858, where his four youngest siblings were born. His father, a Civil War veteran who was born in New York City, worked as a Porter while his mother was born at Black Rock, CT.

John was a 21-year-old Porter when he married Jeannette C. Lyons, an 18-year-old New Bedford, MA native and daughter of Marcus and Charlotta, at Boston on June 13, 1872. It’s unknown if they had children.

John, who resided on Anderson St. in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, died at age 37 at Massachusetts General Hospital where he had been treated for pneumonia. His death came a week before his youngest sibling George died of Tuberculosis.
