His grave stone says that he is the "...son of Abraham and Elizabeth Bird....".
It is clear that the local gravestone carver assumed, when he heard the name "Bird", that is was spelled with an "i". That was the family he knew. By the time the stone was completed and his family went back home, the mistake was done and never corrected.
His father was Abraham BYRD (1772-1857) and his mother was Elizabeth Gillespie (1781-1868). William is not mentioned in his father's will, because he had already passed away. This gravestone is mentioned on page 260 of "The Joseph Hunter And Related Families: Beckwith, Sikes, Bird, Riley, Byrd, Phillips, Medley, of Southeast Missouri", by Hunter, Stephen Ben, b. 1871, Benjamin Bird Moore, and Mary Amanda Medley Hunter, Southern Historical Press, Charleston, MO, 1997. Being the older brother of Ingabo Hunter Byrd, it is not surprising that William was in Mississippi County. There is no record of William marrying. He was likely at Bird's Point, either just visiting Ingabo and her family, or possibly working for his brother-in-law, John Bird, at one of John's businesses, when he died.
