Mary Elizabeth "Beth" (Stanley) Finnerty Norris
Beth (or Stanley as I called her) and I went to kindergarten together, but then she continued her education at a Catholic school in Brownsburg - St. Malachy - and I went on to Avon Elementary. She came to Avon in Junior High and we became really good friends over the the school years. She was a cheerleader for a few of those years and had exceptional talent doing splits, but did suffer an injury once causing her to need crutches. She is the only person I ever knew who could walk with crutches without the aid of her arms. She could simply make them move by moving her shoulder joints.
Beth was a fellow art student and that might be why we got along so well. But we also both had the gift of gab and could talk all night long. There were many slumber parties during which Beth and I would stay up all night and watch the sun rise while having our root beer.
We also enjoyed hanging out at the Westlake pool and club. After a night of sleepless slumber partying, we'd fall asleep poolside and wake up with a sunburn.
After high school graduation, Beth went one way (to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College) and I went another (to Ball State University). We still kept in touch some, but managed to drift apart as I moved around the midwest.
It was during a class reunion in 1984 we got back in contact with one another. She was up in Middletown, Indiana (the one near Anderson) and worked as a nurse. After that, she and her husband would occasionally come to Cincinnati to visit me. For some reason, I most remember going to see Sister Act with her at the cinema in the Princeton Plaza Shopping Center across from the Tri-County Mall (near Springdale, Ohio). It was extra funny getting to watch it with my Catholic friend who loved to laugh.
She also helped me pick up my new pickup (a 1990 Ford Ranger) at a dealership north of Dayton, Ohio. She had to drive from Middletown, Indiana, to Fairfield, Ohio and pick me up and then take me to Hal Gilliam Ford in New Carlisle, Ohio. Afterwards, we went to eat in Richmond, Indiana. Only a true friend would do all that to help a friend out.
We remained very close friends until she moved to Pennsylvania in late 1994. She married Brooks Kent Norris on December 29, 1994 in Elkton, Maryland. I did not find out until her death that we had lost touch because Multiple Sclerosis was taking its toll on her life.
I loved my friend Beth and will miss her until I go to where she is now.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by two step-children, Timothy Norris and Katelyn Norris, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Marsha Mongell of Brownsburg, Indiana, and Linda Kopcha of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Friday, August 27, 2004 in the St. Malachy Church, 326 North Green Street, Brownsburg, Indiana at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Golden Retriever Rescue, P.O. Box 513, Plainfield, Indiana 46168. Arrangements were handled by Wilde Funeral Home, Parkesburg, Pennsylvania (610) 857-5551.
