Mathias was the oldest of seven children born to Jacob and Barbara (Barnhardt) Moose. He married (1) Esther Barringer 17 Oct 1831 (she died 30 Jan 1833; no children). He married (2) Mary File 7 Jan 1935, and they were the parents of four children: William Julius (17 Jan 1837 -?) Milla K. (16 Nov 1837 to 23 Jun 1839), Alexander Franklin (8 Jun 1839 -?), and Daniel Monroe (20 Jul 1846 -?). Boys were living with parents in Stanly Cty. in 1860 census.
