BILLY RAY BLANKENSHIP, 71 years of age of the Knox Creek section of Hurley, VA, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy, VA. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of John Henry Blankenship of Hurley, VA, and the late Ada (Matney) Blankenship. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Baptist faith. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was a retired Coal Miner and Truck Driver.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by 1-Daughter: Melena Blankenship; Sister: Penny Blankenship and Brother: Frankie Ray Blankenship.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52-years, Brenda (Lester) Blankenship of Hurley, VA; 2-Daughters: Michelle (Scott) McClanahan of Hurley, VA, Chasity Branham of Hurley, VA; 4-Grandchildren: Brittany (Alex) Prater, Zachary (fiancée Jordan Lester) McClanahan, Taylor Skeens (fiancé Angel Flores), Holly Branham (fiancé Brandon Barnett); 7-Great-Grandchildren: Jaylee, Kadin, Taylan, Graceson, Noah, Maverick and Sierra "CeeCee" Stacy; 2-Brothers: Thurman (Tovie) Blankenship of Bassett, VA, Delbert (Geraldine) Blankenship of Bassett, VA; 2-Sisters: Lois Prater of Hurley, VA, Phyllis Hurley of Stopover, KY.

Also, survived by many family and friends to mourn his loss. He will be greatly missed.

Friends may call at the Stopover Freewill Baptist Church Saturday and Sunday at 6:00 P.M. with services at 7:00 P.M.

Funeral Services for BILLY RAY BLANKENSHIP will be conducted Monday, January 4, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. at the Stopover Freewill Baptist Church with Danny McCoy, Arthur Shortt and Larry Rife officiating with burial to follow in the Chapman-Justice Cemetery on Guesses Fork.

Active Pallbearers will be Alex Prater, Zachary McClanahan, Reece Ferrell, Jody Ferrell, David John and Brandon Prater.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Fred Matney and David Daniels.

We will be taking proactive measures to help prevent the spread of any potential illness. In an effort to minimize direct contact, we ask that you consider avoiding shaking hands or physical contact with the members of the family or other guests. Direct Eye Contact, Loving Words, and a Warm Smile can be as meaningful to the families as a traditional handshake or hug, especially during these difficult times. Face masks or coverings are required and practicing social distancing.
