Thompson Ashby was born in Prince George, Maryland. Various dates for his birth are 1768 or 1770 to 1773.

Thompson was the youngest of six children born to Thomas Edward Ashby & Mary Elizabeth McCULLOUGH Ashby.

Thompson and his brothers Bladen and Silas moved to Kentucky after their parents died. The three Ashby brothers also had older siblings including Mary Ann, Elizabeth, & Hankerson.

Thompson Ashby married Letitia "Lettice" or "Lettie" VAN METER on Feb. 8, 1791 in Nelson County, Kentucky.

Thompson's brother Bladen Ashby married Catherine VAN METER who was the sister of Letitia VAN METER, Thompson's wife.

Thompson and Letitia had ten children:
Mary "Polly", Nancy, Abraham, Silas, Milton, Thompson, Bladen, Elizabeth, Letitia "Lettie" and James.

Thompson was crushed by a horse in Shelby Co., KY, several years before before the family moved to Indiana. Although his tombstone inscription in Ladoga Cemetery reads 1773-1825, the family history states that "he left a widow with a houseful of children." Lettice Ashby was listed as the head of household in the 1820 Shelby Co., KY census with 6 children (ages 7-19), 4 children having married. Familysearch lists Thompson's death date as 23 Apr 1814. Other sources indicate his death may have occurred between 1812-1815. Since the entire Ashby family moved to Indiana in 1828, he may have been disinterred and taken with them to their new home, OR a marker could have been placed at the Ashby gravesite in memory of him when Letitia died in 1845. If the marker was made many years after his death, it could be the year was inscribed incorrectly.
