Mary was the daughter of Sam G. Smith and Julia Johnson Smith. She was raised in the Lake Mills area in Winnebego County, Iowa.
After her marriage to Sivert Anderson in 1897, the family lived in the Lake Mills area for a short time, where their eldest children were born. In 1903, the family followed her parents to Moscow, Idaho, where they rented a farm. Sivert became a rural mail carrier using a horse and buggy.
Later, lured by better work opportunities, the family moved to Kellogg, Idaho, where Sivert worked in the mine until he became "leaded" and had to quit work. After some additional moving around, including Iowa, North Dakota, and Washington State, the family ended up in Moscow once again, where Sivert got a job as a janitor at the School of Mines building of the University of Idaho, where he worked until he retired.
After her husband's death, Mary ended up in Coeur d'Alene, where she became a member of the Lutheran Church. She lived in Coeur d'Alene for eleven years until her death at the age of 85.
