Joyce Slade Strom died Dec. 5, 2020 at the age of 84. She was born Sep. 30, 1936 in Springfield, Vermont, the first child of Harold Slade and Shirley Blodgett. She graduated from Springfield High School, and the University of Vermont in 1958.

Joyce taught elementary school in Schenectady, NY and Springfield, VT. She became a lifelong advocate for children and families, working for the Head Start Program in Springfield, VT and Springfield, MA. She was appointed as Director of the Mass. Office for Children by then Gov. Michael Dukakis. Subsequently, she was appointed to the U.S. Office of Children, Youth and Families by Pres. Jimmy Carter. Joyce later became Executive Director of Act Together, Inc., a not-for-profit advocating for "high risk youth" in the U.S. In 1984, she became Deputy Director of the Child Welfare League of America, where she traveled the U.S. and Canada supporting governmental and private agencies, and developed a reputation for her power and tenacity, and in 1991, she was chosen as President and CEO of the Mass. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children from which she retired in 2003.

Joyce will continue to be loved and missed by her husband James Malone; by her sons Erik, Kai and Tor; their wives Rosario and Deborah; and her grandchildren Annika, Erik, Aksel, Kai, Kier, and Kohl; her step-children Susan and Eric Malone; by her seven siblings and their families; and by her many friends and neighbors. All will cherish memories of her wit, compassion, generosity and love.
