Lawson was the third of nine children born to Isaac Monnet and Hannah Carlin/Carland in Plumb Creek, Shelby County, Kentucky. The family moved to Putnam County in 1822, settling in Marion and Floyd Townships. Lawson married Jane Collings there July 26, 1826. He secured Federal Land Patents in section 35 on April 2, 1829 and Sept. 30, 1834 and farmed for a living. His father, Isaac, purchased land in Marion township. Lawson and Jane raised a family of thirteen children: William Polk, Theresa (Millman), Isaac, Catherine Ann (Wilkinson), Spencer Carter, Amasa, Marion Lawson, Franklin, Hannah J. (Collings, Miller, Wesner), Wilson Dorr, Emma Jane (Pierson), John H.S., and Ira. Lawson's mother passed away July 6, 1850, his father June 3, 1852.
