Margaret Yarnell Hughey, 94 died Tuesday June 3, at the Atkins, Arkansas Nursing Center where she had been a resident for the past year.

Margaret, or “Miss Margaret” or “Boppoo” as she was called by family and friends alike, was born in Searcy, Arkansas to Charles Wesley and Julia (Thompson) Yarnell on June 26th, 1891. She was a 1912 graduate of Galloway Woman’s College (later merged with Hendrix College) in Searcy. When she was in her early 20s, Margaret, being of an adventurous nature, traveled by motor car to the eastern United States, primarily Virginia, where she made stops in Hampton and Charlottesville among other locations. She kept a wonderful photo diary of her travels which is now in the possession of her grandchildren.

While attending Galloway, Margaret visited Eliah (Bost) Mitchell of Atkins. While on the visit she met Rife Sibley Hughey, whom she married on Febuary 17, 1918 in Searcy. Rife was a druggist and owner of the City drug store in Atkins until his death in February, 1956.

Margaret and Rife joined the Atkins M.E. (now UMC) Church in 1918. Margaret was the oldest active member of the church (68 years). She has been past Secretary of the Memorials Committee, helped with the Lions Club for many years and was an honorary member of the Administrative Council.

Margaret took an active part in the WSCS (now UMW) at the local church as well as at the Conway District and the North Arkansas Conference. She once served as Conway District President and attended all district and conference meetings. A few years back when she was asked how many North Arkansas Conference meetings she had attended, she replied “How many have there been?” She also participated in the School of Missions each year and would return home to lead women in mission studies.

She began teaching Sunday School in her early years with the church, but the longest being teacher of the United Sunday School Class. The class recently voted to change their name to the “Margaret Hughey Sunday School Class” in memory of their long-time teacher and friend.

Tom Gillispie, Editor of the Atkins Chronicle, in a wonderful tribute to Miss Margaret, wrote that she was “undoubtedly one of the kindest, most thoughtful persons we have ever known. Her life was a continuing benediction… Much can be accomplished when you live to be an active 94 year old and Miss Margaret did her part.”

Funeral services were held at the Atkins UMC on Wednesday, June 4. Margaret was preceeded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Mattie Bell (Yarnell) Pyle, Mary Irene (Yarnell) Wassell, Eleanor (Yarnell) Busby; and a daughter Julia Martha (Hughey) Gray. Survivors include her son Rife Hughey Jr. (Annette) of Nashville, Tennessee; her daughter, Nancy A. (Hughey) Young of Atkins; six grandchildren, Margaret (Peggy) Duvall, Thomas E. Young, Paula Hughey, Rife Hughey, Joanna (Gray) Lange and James R. Gray; and three great-grandchildren, John Duvall, Robert Young, and Sarah Duvall.
