Neil was born on October 26, 1946, in Chicago, to Eugene and LaPreal (Winterton) Larsen. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he loved building things out of old junk as a young boy and then grew to love skiing and singing in his high school choir and performing in musicals.
At age 19, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy and Switzerland. He especially loved Italy; he lived in many cities and saw many great works of art there.
After his mission, he attended Brigham Young University where he met his wife, Kay McBride. On June 5, 1969, they married in the Idaho Falls Temple.
He was drafted and served the US Army as a clerk in the office of the Directory of Military Personnel at Headquarters in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
After his military service, Neil returned to college and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Brigham Young University in 1974.
Neil and Kay lived in Provo, Utah; Coolidge, Arizona; San Manuel, Arizona; Kuna, Idaho; and Provo, Utah again, before moving to Spanish Fork.
Neil worked in retail management for several department stores and had a talent for supervising people. He made them feel valued, and made sure they had the resources to get their work done. He loved working with people and always had a story to share. Neil was active in Rotary for several years. He served as Vice President and President of the San Manuel Arizona Chapter and was responsible for several community events, most memorably bringing an old-fashioned 3-ring tent circus to town. Neil served in church in the Young Men's organization, in several bishoprics, and as an ordinance worker in the Provo and Payson Temples.
After retirement, Neil and Kay fulfilled lifelong dreams of visiting the Holy Land and serving a mission together in Raymondville, Texas.
Neil loved DIY projects, road trips, driving up to the mountains, camping, hiking, mountain biking, old TV reruns, root beer, family history, teasing, bad jokes, naps, and serving people. He was one of the first to volunteer whenever anyone needed help, and often kept his family waiting as he socialized after events or church services.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and LaPreal; and his brother, Howard. He is survived by his sisters: Carol, Jeanene, and Brenda; his wife, Kay; his children: Tamara (James), Karen, Kim (Rod), Marilee (Scott), Jill (Jordan), Jeff (Corinne), Michael (Lizzie), and Lacey (Dylan); and his grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held on Friday, December 18, 2020, at Utah Veteran's Cemetery Memorial Park.
