Ginger's spunkiness remained with her until her very last days. When referred to as Virginia by her critical care nurse, she was sure to correct her, "It is Ginger, not Virginia." On December 5, 2020, she joined her loving husband, Rick Wheeler. She was a sister to Linda and Francis, a mother to James and Cindi, and a Nana to Natalie and Ryan.
At a young age, Ginger began a long battle against rheumatoid arthritis. However, on the days when she felt her healthiest, she would insist on going to the Friday night dances with her closest friends, although always with her younger sister, Linda, tailing not far behind. One summer, in her hometown of Cloverdale, California, she won a competition for selling the most tickets at the Citrus Fair. She donned the "The Citrus Queen" title with pride, a symbol of her beauty, outgoing nature, and moxie attitude.
That is what caught her late husband's attention the first time they met. Rick was driving, sharing his life story with a group of gals in his car. He mentioned that he had been, "raised in Lake County." A grammatical correction echoed from the backseat, "That is where they rear people and raise pigs." This of course, was none other than Ginger. Later that night, still steaming from her comment, Rick marched up to her front door to have a word with this spunky, young girl. "Who exactly do you think you are, talking to me like that?" As her tears began to flow, he forgot why he was even mad in the first place. From that moment forward, Rick dedicated his life to taking care of the precious gem he uncovered that day.
Married at the age of 18, the two young kids set out to make a life for themselves. California was their home, from Napa to Modesto, they lived everywhere. But when it came time to raise children, Montana brought the promise of the outdoors and a more quiet life.
Immediately, Ginger took to real estate like a seasoned professional. She had the gift of the gab and a charming way with her clients. Soon she would be making more money than Rick. And sure enough, he was soon to follow. Together they enjoyed building a successful real estate business, ERA.
In their off time, Rick and Ginger's travels took them far and wide. They cruised along the Pacific Ocean to Alaska and Hawaii, camped in their trailer in the forests of Canada and Glacier National Park, and took road trips to the Oregon Coast.
Even through a life-long battle with rheumatoid arthritis, she remained strong beyond imagination. Though her last days were limited by complications of R.A., she is no longer suffering from pain. She will be dearly missed, but our hearts are comforted by the thought of her resting peacefully with her life partner and husband of 60 years, Rick.
Visitation will be hosted at O'Connor Funeral Home on Sunday, December 13, 2020, from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. A graveside burial service will be held at Mount Olivet on Monday, December 14, 2020, at 12:00 p.m.
