Much of Mittie's life is a mystery. She married first James W. Anders in 1874, possibly in or near Milam County (whose records were destroyed by a courthouse fire in 1874). A daughter named James ("Jimmie") was born to them on 13 Dec 1874. Presumably Jimmie was named after her father because he had before she was born.

Mittie married second Thomas Slater on 07 Oct 1877 in Bell County, Texas (in the marriage record she is listed as Mintie Anders). Thomas and Mittie had one son, Roland Edwin Slater, who is therefore a half-brother to Jimmie. Jimmie and Roland appear together with Thomas Slater in Lee County, Texas in the 1880 United States Census. At this point Mittie is already dead and Thomas has remarried to Annie Moore Shaw (on 23 Sep 1879 in Milam County, Texas). It is quite possible Mittie died in or shortly after giving birth to Roland.

Mittie's grave has not been located, this memorial serving to tie her children together as siblings.
